helping Fiji into the future
The Fiji Government has committed to giving all Fijians access to electricity by December 2022, with 81 percent of this to be produced from renewable sources. While this is now unlikely to be achieved, the delay could be minimised by proceeding with Hydro Taveuni and other renewable energy projects.
There are many outer islands in Fiji that are never likely to be part of a major grid system because of the difficulty and cost of subsea cable connections. The situation is different where islands are close together, as are Vanua Levu and Taveuni. In this case, a new Northern grid based on hydro with some solar support is not just an idle dream, but a likely reality.
By maximising its use and export of mini hydro, Taveuni can achieve the unusual status of becoming one of the few totally carbon neutral destinations in the world. Enough carbon free energy will be produced to fully compensate for all energy used including that for air, land and sea transportation as well as electricity production. Increasingly, people want to travel to beautiful destinations with ecotourism in mind, so it is likely that travel to Taveuni will increase when the island can offer total carbon neutrality as a bonus to visitors.
By visiting Taveuni for a future vacation, you may experience a tropical island paradise without leaving a single carbon footprint.
